Spartacus Books is a nonprofit, volunteer-run bookstore and resource centre. The store has been run collectively for over 40 years.

We are open every day. You are welcome to come in and hang out with or without shopping. We have free internet and computer access, complimentary coffee and tea, and comfy couches. We’re also proud to have a small selection of board games available for use in-store by visitors.

Our hours are as follows: Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

We have an excellent selection of journals and magazines, for example the latest issues of Adbusters, Bitch, Briarpatch, Communities, Endnotes, Herizons, Jacobin, New Internationalist, Rethinking Schools, Roar Magazine, World War 3 Illustrated, and Z Magazine.

Spartacus has an amazingly huge collection of nowhere-else-to-be-found zines by local and non-local activists, poets and writers! We also sell patches, badges, t-shirts, and posters. We have a growing selection of literature in French, German, Esperanto, and Spanish.


Spartacus regularly hosts various events – poetry readings, feminist discussion clubs, book and project presentations, squeezebox circle meetings, and others.

Do you want to use the space? Up to 30 people can fit in comfortably and we have a projector and sound system. No charge is involved.

To apply to host an event at Spartacus, please read and fill out our Event Booking Request form [this is an online Google form] – ideally with at least 7 days notice! We recommend checking the calendar below to ensure the time you want to hold your event is available.

Get Involved

Spartacus is a nonprofit, volunteer-run store. We provide a free space for community events, internet use, learning, and fun! There are many ways that you can help us continue to do this.


If you are interested in volunteering at Spartacus, please complete our volunteer application form [this is an online Google form]. As a volunteer you can take on a weekly shift at the store, organize events, promote Spartacus on- and off-line, or take on other tasks based on your interests.

Spartacus is supported in part by the generous donations of numerous community members. All donors to Spartacus become Spartacus members – and receive 10% off all purchases for an entire year, along with access to our DVD rentals! If you are interested in making a donation to Spartacus or becoming a monthly supporter, please email us or come talk to a volunteer at the store.
